Who Are We

Our names are Viktoria and Sloan.  We met in a club at MacEwan University and quickly became thick as thieves over our mutual and profound love of gothic literature, cursed memes, tea and madeleines. Together we decided that we wanted to create a little corner/ niche where we felt comfortable as feminists, book nerds and historians. We realized there is a void waiting to be filled, a place where history fans like us can connect with people of different disciplines. This is why we decided that our name would be the Interdisciplinary History Group, a safe place for people to discuss the past from an intersectional and collaborative lens while being sure to have fun.

Viktoria

Hi! My name is Viktoria (she/her). (Yes, with a K. I get that a lot) I am a history major with a double minor in classics and English as well as one of the cofounders and cohosts for the Interdisciplinary History Group and its podcast. I down books like shots, drink tea like a maniac and swear like a sailor. (Although you would never guess by my supposed soft exterior) I love to read historical fiction, fantasy, and mystery novels when I am not bombarding myself with class readings, lectures and homework. I also enjoy cuddling my dogs, doing photography for my Instagram (@viktoriawithakreadsbooks), spending time with my loved ones, and writing. I eventually hope to work as a museum curator, professor or at least a researcher of some sort. I am keeping my options open but look forward to the future.

One of the reasons I have gone on this endeavour is mainly because I love to hear about history from different lenses, and I want to explore them. While historical events are important, I also feel a need to discuss how the past intersects with our daily lives. Looking at history from new perspectives, and with knowledge from different disciplines allows for nuance and makes history feel more approachable, accessible, and enjoyable. When you find something in common between yourself and a new acquaintance it can open doors to a new relationship, so who is to say this could not be the same for history. I look forward to examining these connections further with Sloan through research, interviews, and much much more. The excitement I feel is indescribable and I cannot wait to share it with you all.

Sloan

Hello All!

I am Sloan (she/they) and I am the other host of the Interdisciplinary History Podcast as well as a contributing writer for our blog and programming organizer for our groups events. I have about a year left in my undergraduate studies at Macewan University and will be graduating with a BA Double Major in Sociology and History. I love indie/punk covers of pop-songs and drink way too much tea. I’ve been known to describe myself as a chaotic-wholesome and a social moth.

The Interdisciplinary History Podcast is intended to be a place where the past can intersect with and be applied to other academic disciplines. My personal hope is to see people engage critically with our understanding of the world we live in by exploring the interplay between our conception of the past and contemporary life. I am interested in the past as a way through which we can understand our present and as a tool for transforming the future of society. Because my interests largely revolve around social powers and the social typing process with regards to status I view a conscious and nuanced understanding of history as vital to both social scientists and policy creators.
